CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Southwest Florida's most beloved underground animal weather forecaster is about to take the limelight as Cape Coral hosts Ground Owl Day at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 2, at the Pelican Baseball Complex. Ground Owl Day is a local spin on Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. That's where folks gather to see if a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil either sees his shadow or doesn't. Legend has it (albeit with a bad track record with 39% historical accuracy) that when Phil sees his shadow, the area is in store for six more weeks of winter.
